How to re-arrange automation steps

If you want to change the order of steps in an automation, it is important to understand how the current Mailcamp editor works.

Mailcamp does not currently expose drag-and-drop step rearranging

  • Based on the current automation editor flow, Mailcamp does not expose a dedicated drag-and-drop tool for moving automation steps to another position.
  • You should also not expect cut-and-paste placeholders such as Drop step here or Paste step here in the current automation builder.
  • If you used this feature in another platform before, that same rearranging experience is not currently available in Mailcamp.

How to change your automation structure in Mailcamp

  • Open Automations and select the workflow you want to update.
  • Click the step you want to change.
  • Update the selected step settings if you only need to change its content or configuration.
  • If the step needs to be replaced, use the available Replace this action option where applicable.
  • If the step needs to appear in a different position, remove it and add a new step in the correct place.

What you can do with existing steps

  • You can edit an existing action instead of rebuilding the whole workflow when only the settings need to change.
  • You can replace certain actions with another action from the editor flow.
  • You can remove a step and then insert a new one in the location that matches your updated workflow logic.

Working with condition branches

  • If your automation uses a Condition step, be careful when restructuring the workflow because conditions control branching logic.
  • When removing a condition, Mailcamp may ask how you want to handle the existing branches instead of simply dragging the whole branch somewhere else.
  • This means condition-based structures should be reviewed carefully before making major changes.

Best practice before making bigger changes

  • If you plan to make a major structural change, consider creating a copy of the automation first.
  • This gives you a safe version to work from before removing or replacing steps in the original workflow.
  • It is the safer approach when you want to test a new sequence of actions without editing the existing flow too aggressively.

Important note

  • This article should not promise drag-and-drop or cut-and-paste step rearranging unless that behavior is actually visible in the Mailcamp automation editor UI.
